1/2 It Up

28 Jul

Yesterday began day 1 of my 1/2 marathon training and I gotta say it went pretty well.  I decided to go with the Jeff Galloway program because the local running store is having a group training using that method for a 1/2 that is the same weekend as mine (perfect timing right?)

I figured that since this is my longest distance planned that I would do ti with a group because that would allow me to ask questions (in person) along the way and I can find out if I am doing things wrong.  I’ve never really run a distance that required any kind of nutrition along the way (besides water from the water stops) so group training allows me to figure everything out without hurting myself.

The one thing with the Galloway method is that it is a run walk method (Even from the outright get go) and while I would like to run a 1/2 all the way straight through I reckon for this 1st one the goal is just to finish and then I can improve from there.  Its a little odd even doing it at short distances (yesterday we did 3 miles at a 3 minute run 1 minute walk split) because I can run 3 miles straight so yeah.

Training went well there was a group of about 10ish (I’m not good with estimating numbers especially in people form).  We started off together but the group leader say that if we needed to to go faster likewise slower.  Surprisingly (to me) I was actually near the front of the pack and with 2 other people that had broken off from the rest of the group.  The 3 miles was one of my longest (time wise), mainly because of the 1 minute walking breaks (cuts into your time a bit), and it was a bit hillier than my normal route.

I had to get up extremely early to go on the run and almost went to bed at 6:30 lol. It was a long day!

I was the youngest of the group with the rest who have been out of school for a good bit of time.  I look forward to going back next week (we will do 4 miles) and I have to do 2 maitenance workouts of 3 miles this week along with cross training (I’m going to do kickboxing on one of those days and prob run (until school starts) on the other day).

My name is Holley and I have officially started my 1/2 marathon journey!

Unexused Absence

24 Jul

Sorry for the absence as of late (yes I know I appologized in the last post).  Things have been fine, I guess I’ve just been in a blogging/social media funk as of late.  Hopefully I can shake it ASAP.  Today the weather finally cleared up around the time I was going to run (It had rained earlier) I however had a stomach ache so I didn’t run. I did take the boy though on a nice long walk about 1.5 miles so I did do something.  It sure was humid, 5 minutes into walking and I was sweating up a storm.

I also did make a new personal record with my planks. I broke 1 minute and 30 seconds! My closest plank to that was at least a week ago at around 1 minute and 10 seconds.

My name is Holley and my absence was unexcused.

No Title on Puppose

19 Jul

So I had a nearly complete post written and witty title but thought it was best not to publish it yet.

Sorry I’ve been absent this past week (blog and twitter) work and the heat, etc has been busier than planned.

This is going to another short post with hopefully a longer one tomorrow (maybe another product review eh?)

The boy and I did go to Bruester’s (Icecream this evening), they give free doggie sunday’s to the pups that come.  It was actually kinda cool (temperature wise) when we went out, so I hooked his leash to the table and we just enjoyed the weather for a bit.

Tomorrow I may try to go to the new Dollar General that is opening up near my apt.  The first 50 or so people get a free $10 gift card and I got a coupon in the mail for $5 of a $25 purchase.  I need some more laundry detergent and dishwashing detergent so I figured this may be an opportunity to get them for a cheaper price. Why not.

My name is Holley and I’m sorry you had to waste time reading this post today.

Your Flip’n Kidding Me

13 Jul

Well hey there internet friends!

As promised I said that I would be doing my first product review for you.  I’m sure that many of you have heard of this product but I figured I would share anyways 🙂  To start off with I’ll give the disclaimer that this post is not sponsored by the product company (or any company).  I heard about this product from twitter friends and decided to buy one and see if it worked for me.

So the product I am reviewing today is the Flip Belt!

You can check out their website at: http://www.flipbelt.com/

What is the flip belt you may ask? Well it looks like this:

Its a tubuler contunous belt that you can wear on your hips or waist, which ever you prefer.  Its hard to tell from the pic (and unfortunately I haven’t taken a pic with my belt) but there are two pocket openings in the front of the belt as well as the back of the belt.  The company has a great video on their website and on YouTube that explains the belt and shows how to use it.  They say that you can put your stuff (keys, phones, etc) in the belt without worry of it falling out and you can flip the belt inwards in order to lock it in place.

This is description they have for their product:

No need to fumble with fasteners while you’re active, you don’t have to wear a fanny pack or armband… just slip your phone & items in/out of the pocket openings & slide them anywhere you want. Flip belt inward to securely lock in your items… It’s so easy & looks great.  Patents Pending
o Multi-access pocket openings throughout belt
o Turn items & pocket access up/down/inside as convenient
o Flip to lock in items
o Reflective logo – 3M Quality Reflective
o Non-Bounce, Even Design
o No buckles to cause uncomfortable chafing
o Machine washable & Machine Dryable
o Great for holding medication on the go.  Inhalers, insulin pumps, Epipens, etc…
o EPA Certified, Odor Resistant, Pilling Resistant, Anti-Bacterial High Tech Poly Spandex Fabric
o Available in colors, accent your workout wardrobe

I had grown tired of carrying my phone in my hand with my runs and literally had no idea what to do with my keys.  I had them on a wrist band for a while but then I learned that it kept hitting the back of my hand when I ran which resulted in bruises.  After that I would try to find a place to hide them by my apartment but I was always worried that someone saw me hide them and would get them and break into my apartment (I’m slightly paranoid sometimes).   So I didn’t know what to do.

I had used an armband before when I used my ipod for runs, however the band would always move and get in the way.  Plus I wanted to carry water with me on hotter and longer days and didnt want to end up with a handful of things when I went running.  In addition as I begin to train for my half-marathon I know that I am going to have to start refueling on longer runs and would have no where to put my gels or chews or whatever I end up using. So I started to look into different belts but had no idea what to look for.

In comes twitter.  From the more expereinced runners I began to follow I started noticing different give aways and contests, and for a period of time it seemed like the common theme was the FlipBelt.  I did a little researh and thought it was a pretty cool product but wasn’t sure about spending money for it (poor graduate student in case you forgot).  So I entered as many giveaways that I saw with the FlipBelt.  Unfortunately I didn’t win any of them.

So I gave in and went online and bought one.  So now you finally get to the review.

First things first FlipBelt has an amazing customer service team.  I had asked them a question on twitter and they quickly responded and when I placed my order I had another question and put it in the comment box and they responded within 24 hours to my question.  If a company has  great customer service then they are already looking good in my book.

I ordered the Neon Punch Orange color (pictured above) and it came to my apartment in less than a week.  One thing that I liked immediately was the packaging.  It was simple and nothing much and I didn’t have to open 5 million things and have a mound of packaging that I would then have to dispose of.  I also didn’t have to deal with those annoying little tags (you know the ones like with socks and you rip the socks apart only to find it didn’t go all the way through and then have to turn your apartment upside down looking for scissors because you can’t break it without them).

I put my flipbelt through a 3 part test.  I wanted to see if it really was as comfortable as people said and if my stuff wouldn’t move.

Test 1: Gym exercise.

My local running store has been offering a free kickboxing class once a week for free and I though that this would be the perfect place to try out my new FlipBelt.  With all the high energy and movement it was interesting to see if it would hold up to its claims.

So I go to class and put my phone and keys in the belt and start kickboxing. Five minutes into class and I had completely forgetten I was wearing the belt! My phone didn’t bounce awkwardly and when we did floorwork I could easly slide my belt around to the side. And let me tell you that class was intense!

Winner: FlipBelt

Test 2: Washing

After class I was pretty sweaty and stinky and the belt had absorbed some of the sweat (although I would note my phone was as dry as could be).  So I threw it in the wash with the rest of my running clothes. I’m not sure why I’m considering this a test but just wanted to see if it would shrink or something (not sure but whatever).

It came out of the wash and it was just like when I first opened the package.

Winner: FlipBelt

Test 3: Running

Now here is the true test.  Right now I don’t really need it for kickboxing becasue I can just set my stuff by my water in the back of the room, but I can see myself taking it to the actual gym and using it.  So I took the belt on my run, stuck my key and phone in it again and then put my headphones on.

I wasn’t sure if with running if it would move since that is a little bit of a different motion than kickboxing but I was about to find out. Verdict? It didn’t move!  Although I did admit it was a little awkward to use to get stuff in and out of it as I was running, but I am chalking that up to a learning curve of never using it before as my next run was much easier to use.

Winner: FlipBelt

I’ve got to admit I absolutely love my belt!  It makes it so much easier to run hands free, and today I was able to carry a bottle of water with me without feeling like I was trying to juggle carrying to many things.

I’m really tempted to order another belt so that I can use one while the other is in the wash. 🙂

The only complaint that I would have with the belt (which is really my fault) is that they ran out my size in the color I wanted (a bright green) and don’t plan on restocking that color.

The belt also just looks like an extension of your shorts or pants (like the yoga pants with a colored bar up top) so it is more natural and streamlined with the rest of your gear.  And mine actually fits to where my shirt covers it.

The FlipBelt is so convienant that I’m thinking about using it while I go site-seeking on my trip to NYC next month.  I could easily fit my ID and credit card or cash in the belt and have it under my shirt so that I don’t have to worry about a purse snatcher or something.  (It’s like a more stylish money belt).

I hope you enjoyed my review (next time I’ll try to add more pics) and GO BUY A FLIPBELT!!!

My name is Holley and I approve this message.

I spent more time trying to come up with a title then the content of this Post…

11 Jul

Hey Friends!

Just a quick update to keep everyone in the loop.  Plank A Day has been going pretty decent today I managed a 1 minute plank! Still been keeping up with the 30 day squat challenge with 105 squats for the day.

Today I was finally able to run outside (Even though it wwas a bit hot) instead of being left with running like a mad woman inside my apartment for 20 minutes with the dog looking at me like I was crazy (got to keep my run streak going!).  The weather has been uck, with storms and lightening and just plain weird.  Some days its fine in the morning but come end of work its raining and thundering, no fun at all.

Went to kickboxing on Monday and boy did it kick my behind! My arms decided to take turns being sore.  On Tuesday my right arm was sore and then yesterday my left arm was sore. So weird.

Earlier this week I got one of the products that I ordered (I got the other one in today), and I have been putting it to the test.  Look for my review sometime Sat.

Other than that have a lovely evening! I have to be up extra early tomorrow because we (all the interns) have to drive 2 hrs out of town to go to an all day event for work, but at least I get paid for going !

My name is Holley and I couldn’t have been more happy to run outside for a change.

The ABC’s of Lil (well right now Big) ol’ Me!

9 Jul
Today I was tagged to do the ABC’s of me by Jen.  Jen is one of the most supportive and uplifting people in our FMRMC group (all the ladies are fantastic btws). Check out her amazing journey here.
I figured this would be a quick and easy post to get in for the week 🙂 Let me know if you have any random question you would love to ask!
A. Attached or Single?  Single. Have you not read my post about trying to snag a man by “twisting” my ankle? Also on the #runchat chat Sunday they asked if you could run with anyone for an hour who would it be and why? I responded with Orlando Bloom so that I could “sprain” my ankle and he would carry me home.  A fellow runner responded and said that if I replaced O.B. with Channing Tatum that she would take that deal.  I said I’m not too picky when it come to attractive actors 🙂
B. Best Friend?  My freinds from undgrad. Megan – we were attached at the hip and people thought we were the same person, Claire my first friend at FSU (I can’t wait to skype with them both tonight as we plan our trip to NYC that is less than a month away!!) , Amanda, Brianna and Olivia all of whom were my roommates at some point and the many adventures we shared (plus 2 weddings that I was beyond grateful to be a part of!)

 holleycaseyauburnstadiu
O. Oranges or Apples?  Apples, I like orange flavor but not actual oranges. And the apples would either have to be peeled or cooked.  I’m slightly allergic to the skin, I think its because of the pollen thats on it.  Up until recently I thought it was normal for your lips to tingle and burn after eating apples.
P. Phobias? Absolutely hate snakes and I can’t watch people on t.v/ movies when they are obviously embarrassing themselves.

Q. Quotes? “Don’t be irreplaceable, if your can’t be replaced you can’t be promoted”, “Reach for the moon because even if you miss you will land among the stars”  “If you don’t own a dog, at least one, there is not necessarily anything wrong with you, but there may be something wrong with your life.”

U. Unknown fact about me?  I learned that my fingers were doubled jointed in middle school during FCAT (stupid standarized testing across the state, I would always finish way ahead of the alloted time because to me it was easy and they wouldn’t let you do anything like read or nap )

V. Vegetable? Zipper peas (i think thats what they are called) or cucumbers

W. Worst habit? I love to cook/ bake but hate to clean. So if I’m at home with family I try to pawn that part off on other people by “forgetting it” in the sink…

X. Xray or Ultrasound? X-ray? I’m a slightly awkward person and think ultrasounds are awkward

Y. Your favorite food?  Please don’t make me choose! Too many things I like, now if you said a certain type or a place to eat then I could pick my favories in that category

Z. Zodiac sign? Saggitarious
My name is Holley and now you know me (kinda ) from A to Z!
***side note I just realized that worpress screwed up my spacing AGAIN! (what the heck?!) hopefully this can be fixed because on my edit page it is all spaced nicely, sorry friends!****

FMRMC July Challenges

3 Jul

Last week I recieved in my email the challenges for July for the fatty must run marathon challenge.  If your new to my blog and don’t know what this challenge is hop on over to Julie’s blog here to find out more, or check out my old post here.

Who’s interesting in learning what this month’s challenges are?

  • Plank A Day
  • Sign up for a race
  • 5k Run

Let’s start with plank a day, as I mentioned yesterday I hate core work (Even though I know that it is needed) and of course our challenge is a bunch of core work!  I started this on Monday and let me tell you it was a pretty shaky (and pitiful) 20 seconds.  Julie didn’t really give us a particular regime for this challenge just to do it every day and see how much you improve. Well me being me I had to find something that gave me a little more guidence.  So I went to trusty google and found this:

Currently on day 3 and I’m doing my hardest to not even try to think about or look at anything past Day 9.  The mere thought of a 5 minute plank seems impossible so my strategy is to not even think about it and to cross that bridge when I get to day 30 in which I’m sure will be easier then than it is sitting on day 1.

I have been tweeting my planks to #plankaday, Jennifer (one of the wonderful ladies on this journey with me) told us about that and how they have the @plankpolice and if you go without tweeting your plank they will call you out on twitter! I figure that this would be a good motivation to do my planks and hold some accountability to them.

Next up is signing up for a race to do in July or August.  I think this one was geared towards those who haven’t done an official race yet (outside of training).  I will be looking for races to do but with signing up and starting my 1/2 marathon training on Sats. it will be difficult to fit one in.

I did however spend over an hour in bed last night looking up obstacle races in the nearby area.  I don’t think that mud run I was originally going to do this sat is going to workout , but I did find a 10k mud/obstacle run in october that I am definitely going to sign up for and I think I’ve got at least 2 people from church who said that they would be interesting in doing it with me!  There is also a run in September (which they changed this year because it is normally in July) that I have done several times that I would like to do again.

Finally the challenge is to run another timed 5k.  Nothing much to explain here.

I’ve also decided to do the 30 day squat challenge again , I started it yesterday (since there are 31 days in July) and figure it would another good body strength thing to do, I’m going to try and focus on holding the squats longer instead of going down and immediately coming back up.  I also finally remembered to go to the kickboxing class my local running store has on monday nights (I always seem to remember on tuesdays) which are free!! That was alot of fun because I enjoyed taking areobic kickboxing classes in undergrad and missed it (I was going to join a kickboxing gym up here but it is too expensive).  Boy was I all kinds of sore yesterday and could still feel it some today!  I will definetly be going back (as long as I remember to!).

Finally I’ve bought a couple of different running/workout related things over the past couple of days.  One I bought at the running store and two things I just bought online and should hopefully be coming in sometime next week.  Once everything is in I try and use them and then give y’all a review if your interested.  As a newbie to the official running community I love see all these different products more expereinced runners are talking about and reviewing and I can’t wait to find things that work for me.  Most of these products I have never heard about (like 99.95% of them) so I find it interesting to learn about everything and why people use them/ suggest them.  I’ll leave what I bought as a surprise for now (although I’m sure I’ll tweet about them).

P.S. I just realized how much I use (   ) when I blog, I tend to like to explain things (don’t get me started on playing the game of things, thats a whole other story) sorry about that.  You will just have to live through my commentary and all of its quirks.

My name is Holley and it’s time to Plank it Up!
