Joust the Jolly: Round 2!

27 Aug

So it’s been awhile and and I thought it would be a perfect time for the next round of Joust the Jolly!  If you don’t know what this is, it is where you dear readers get to choose my workout!

Check out my last challenge here: Click ME!!

You can see my review from the challenge winner here: Click Me!!

So lets get down to business. What are you going to vote for?

With school starting back up last week and the new fancy campus gym finially completed and open I thought I would do a challenge with the gym.  With the new gym campus rec has added a whole bunch of new gym classes that students can take.  And let me tell you I love a good gym class. I’ve done kickboxing (I do that currently at the running store), plenty of zumba/dance cardio type classes nd an aqua aerobics class or two.

So for this challenge I am choosing 3 classes that I have either never done before or only done once or twice (for example something like cycling which I did like once during my freshman year in undergrad). (Granted some classes were narrowed down just because of my work/class/gra schedule).

So lets keep this short and sweet Your choices are:

Aqua Yoga – basically Yoga in the water (honestly I’ve never done Yoga before, let alone in the water. I’m more of the cardio pumping class type person)

Core Barre– Apparantly a hot new trend in the fitness world, using elements from ballet (I took 1 year of ballet when I was like 5 and gave it up for soccer if that tells you anything.  I also quit girl scouts because their meetings interfered with soccer practice. Go figure)

TRX Body Blast- Suspension training  focuses on moving through a total body workout to the rhythm of the latest radio hits.  Movements integrate strength, balance and endurance into a single dynamic format that maximizes the benefit of body weight exercises for faster results.  It’s All Core, All the Time!  Get your groove on and join us for a revolutionary way to train!

There were other classes that I’ve never done and spanned different diciplines but I thought that I should keep it to 3 choices for your sakes.

To make it easy to vote I made a poll (hopefully successfully) and I think you can vote as many times as you want. So vote or leave a comment with which workout I should do.  Right now there isn’t a cutoff date for voting but I will probably announce one in the next post.

Have you done any of these workouts? If not which one would you try? Or what is one that you would reccomend?

And just for fun here is a random picture from my computer!

So the challenger for Round 1 of Joust the Jolly was…

***drumroll please*****

The Harry Potter workout!!!

First thing first I had to find which work out to do.  99% of the HP workouts online are for the first movie (and occasionally second movie), however the only movies I had up at my apartment were HP and the Half-Blood Prince and both Dealthly Hallows.  I do have all of the movies but the rest are back home.

Upon not being able to find a workout geared toward either of the Hallows movies (if you know the series, stuff like “points awarded” “points deducted” and “any time a ghost talks” is not gonna fly in the later films)

So I found this workout for the Half-Blood Prince:

(workout credit to http://www.someoneelsesgenius.com)

Let me start by saying that I did modify things a little bit and actucally did the workout over 2 days.  I didn’t realize when I started that the movie was over 2hrs long so at some point I got tired and went to bed (both from the workout and it was past my bed time).  I did however wake up at 5:30 to complete the last 45minutes of the movie.

I also modified some of the actual workouts.  The first one was by mistake. Instead of side lunges I read it wrong and did side step squats (didn’t realize this till the next morning).  I also shortened the plank time (plank a day is one of the July challenges more on that in a day or two) and since I am just starting with planks I did it for a minimal time (otherwise it would’ve been close to 7 minutes straight of planking!!) Finally I modified it towards the end of the movie by switching the situps to vertical crunches (my tailbone was sore and I don’t have enough core strength yet for all of those situps!!).

When I started this challenge I thought “oh this will be easy”, boy was I wrong! Its starts off pretty easy as the movie begins but as it gets going so does the workout! Several times I went from doing jumping jacks straight to squats then lunges and then situps. It was intense!

Of course the one thing I hate when working out it core/ab work (especially situps and burpees) and this comprised a ton of it!  While my pushups may have been baby ones (something I will work out) I did get them all done.

At one point I even tweeted Tom Felton (the actor who plays Malfoy) and told him that I loved him as he portrayed Malfoy but when I have to do 10 situps everytime you appear on screen I wish that you had a smaller role. And let me tell you throughout the movie he appeared a good bit (not as much as earlier movies but at 10 situps a piece it was a crazy amount).  My tailbone was plain sore by the end of them and it took a whole lot of effort to get everything done.

I kinda wished I was able to tally how much of everything I did (the blogger has an estimation on her website but I think it is way off) but considering that the first little bit of the movie had me quadruple checking what I had to do each time and some of them were so close together it would have tough.  Maybe next time since I am more familar with it now.

Overall this was surprisingly a really good workout.  It made it fun and different since I got to watch a movie will I was doing it.  The only downside is when there are really quick scenes with alot of different moves you have to do and little break in between.  This however it balanced out by some of lull period in between.

I would definitely recommend one of the movie work outs! And once I get a little more core strength going on I can step up the intensity without modificaitons.

My name is Holley and there ain’t no magic in the HP workout, its all sweat!

Joust the Jolly :Round 1

26 Jun

New level unlocked!!!!

It’s time for Joust the Jolly (round 1) where YOU get to choose which workout challenge I will do!  It’s your chance dear readers to voice your opinion! I know your there, I see the views and the likes, don’t be shy!

Here’s how its going to work (at least for this round, still working on the official rules):

  •  I will provide you with a choice of workout challenges
  • To cast your vote simply leave a comment below as to which one I should do
  • Come Sunday whichever challenge gets the most votes will be the winner
  • On Sunday I will do a 1 mile run (gotta keep the run streak alive) followed by the winning challenge

This round the challenge is inspired by Pinterest (particullary movies and tv) workouts (lets face it most of the challenges will come in some way shape or form from Pinterest).

The Contenders:

The Harry Potter Workout Challenge

In this challenge I would watch one of the Harry Potter movies and do something in particular everytime something specific happens (for example a spell is cast).

Here is a picture of one of the challenges:

Now I would have to check to see if there was a different one for specific movies (obviously points aren’t awarded in the latter movies) becuase while I have all the movies, I only have certain ones up here at school with me.

Next up we have the Lord of the Rings Workout

(to be honest the rest of these workouts I weren’t sure if they had I just googled it because I love the movies/shows)

Lord of the Rings are my favorite movies of all times (I often enjoyed watching the extended version’s cast commentary, nerd I know).  Once again if this one is chosen I may look through all of the LOTR workouts online to choose the best one.

And Finally we have the Doctor Who workout:

Since Doctor Who is a t.v. series and not a movie if this one is chosen I will do the workout for an equivalant of the average movie time.

Quick Juneathon Update:  Today I ran over 2 miles and tool the pup on a short walk, long day at work but the weekend is close at hand!

So go ahead leave a comment!

Which Workout challenge will I do?

Harry Potter? Lord of the Rings? or Doctor Who? It’s up to you to decide!!!

My name is Holley and I want you to choose which workout I will do!
